Foil surfing is at the core of everything that they do. When you first try the folding propellor, you will quickly discover that (1) it works, and (2) the transition on and off trigger can be difficult. Here is how we train our students, friends and family on using the folding propellor. FLAT WATER FIRST Get onto foil, maintain a level board and a steady speed. When you are ready, completely let go of the trigger AND shift your weight toward your backfoot. Your goal is to maintain a level board and glide on foil for as long as you can. Once you hit the water, restart. By doing this exercise, you begin to learn how much weight you need to shift when you release the trigger. On flat water, you don’t have to worry about wave energy.... --- ## It’s All in the Hips, Baby URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/hips-baby/ We call it the “hip slide”, but we’ve had people suggest “hip sway”, “foil hula” and other weird ideas. The point is that the hips control the efoil board in the pitch axis. HIPS BACKWARD TO GO UP When you are ready to get the efoil off the water and onto the foil, you only need to move your hips slightly backward to achieve a nose-up attitude. This will bring your board onto foil. But don’t stay in that position too long. HIPS FORWARD TO GO DOWN As soon as you feel the board come off the water, start to move your hips forward to change the board to a nose-down attitude. Again, it doesn’t take much movement of your hips to get the board to start coming down. WASH, RINSE, REPEAT Do this exercise at least 10-20 times to get the feel of the board under the control of your hips. We call this “touch-n-go”, just like the airplane takeoff and landing exercises. Soon you will have complete confidence in your pitch control of your efoil. Aloha. The reason for this is because you must first master the two skills of roll control and pitch control before attempting to turn on foil. In our opinion, this is why so many foilers get hurt when they first try to “surf” the foil. Once you have complete confidence in your ability to control your roll and your pitch of the foil, then turning on foil becomes much easier. It is just a matter of starting the turn while you are on foil, and then maintaining pitch control so the board remains level. In most cases, you will unknowingly apply more pressure to the foot that you are turning towards. If you have a goofy stance (right foot forward), and you start a foil turn to the right, you will likely apply more pressure to your right foot. Since your right foot is forward, you will inadvertently change the pitch of your foil downward and find yourself back on the water.... --- ## Swell Following URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/swell-following/ There is a difference between swell following and wave riding on the efoil. Both are fun, and offer much more creativity than flat water riding. If you have the option to get into the open ocean on an efoil, find some rolling waves swells. The up, down, and side to side action of the swells provides a skatepark-like environment that brings out the most creative movements in your board. You will naturally follow the contour of each wave section, and gracefully move your hips and shoulders to match the flow of the ocean. I explain it like a dance between long-time friends. When the ocean stands up, so do you and your efoil. When the ocean shifts to the side, similarly, you and your efoil shift to stay in step. If you can hear music, you know you are in sync with the ocean. Swell following is easiest with your trigger partially pulled to provide sufficient speed to match the swell movement.... --- ## Wave Riding URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/wave-riding/ There is a difference between swell following and wave riding on the efoil. Both are fun, and offer much more creativity than flat water riding. Wave riding uses the power of the wave rather than the power of the efoil motor. To ride the wave energy, you need to have the folding propellor from Lift Foils, or the true glide propellor from Fliteboard. It will take a bit of training to understand how to fully release the trigger without dropping the nose of your board, but once you figure it out, you will fall in love all over again with your efoil. The best part about wave riding with an efoil is the simplicity. No paddling; No pumping; No jet ski. You simply engage your motor to ride out to the waves, and release the trigger when you get aligned with the wave. As such, we have fallen in love with our battery-powered devices. We have cell phones, laptops, boosted boards, and drones. Electric  cars have become much more common in the past 5 years. One of the latest additions to the electric world is the surfboard… or more specifically, the electric foil board. I represent Lift Foils in Hawaii. As such, I have learned how to manage multiple efoils and their batteries on a daily basis. I am not an expert on Lithium Ion technology, but I am a practitioner that follows simple steps every time I use my efoils and their batteries. Here are my common steps to managing my batteries: 1. Charge batteries to full capacity the day before using them 2. Monitor the batteries when they are on the charger 3. Never leave the battery connected to the charger longer than necessary 4. Second, if you are new to foiling, start with the most stable foil set up which means: large area, long fuselage, low aspect tails. On an efoil, most riders are staying on flat water because it is accessible and fun. Some fortunate efoil riders have access to great waves and they know how to ride them. When it comes to tail options, it can be very confusing. Hopefully the chart provided in this blog helps to simplify all of that. Knowing your tail options allows you to make the most of your efoil sessions on both flat water and on surf. With the efoil from Lift Foils, we have six tails to consider. As a beginner, you should start with one of the two tails in the Surf Series. GoPro has made it is very affordable to get an action camera that can make your best life look great on the small screen. When it comes to capturing images while riding the Lift Efoil, it can get a little tricky. First, there is the fact that you are on water. Water droplets on your lens will ruin most shots. The quick fix is to wipe or lick the screen before each shot. The better fix is to use a coating like RainX on the lens before you get into the water. Second, there is the reality of concentration. When riding an efoil, it takes a certain amount of concentration to maintain a level board, the correct speed,  and spatial awareness. If you add in start/stop recording, framing the subject, and considering light and audio, you can see how your concentration becomes heavily taxed. As you dare to ride your board faster, it is important that you correlate speed with lift: The faster you ride, the greater the lift This means that as you accelerate, your foil will generate more lift, thus pushing your board higher in the water column. It won’t take much practice, but if you do it well, you gain huge points with your fans, I mean family and friends. SLOW DOWN KNEEL DOWN The first dismount is a technique for everyone. This battery also is very expensive to replace, so proper maintenance is critical to you and your investment.
