When Nick and his team at Lift Foils started working on the concept of a motor-powered foil board, they definitely had surfing in mind. How could they not? Foil surfing is at the core of everything that they do. When you first try the folding propellor, you will quickly discover that (1) it works, and (2) the transition on and off trigger can be difficult. Here is how we train our students, friends and family on using the folding propellor. FLAT WATER FIRST Get onto foil, maintain a level board and a steady speed. When you are ready, completely let go of the trigger AND shift your weight toward your backfoot. Your goal is to maintain a level board and glide on foil for as long as you can. Once you hit the water, restart. By doing this exercise, you begin to learn how much weight you need to shift when you release the trigger. On flat water, you don’t have to worry about wave energy. FOLLOW WAVES Now, do the same thing while riding near the top of a small swell. Avoid breaking water, and start small. This time, your goal is to notice the difference in how the water feels beneath your feet. You should sense the wave energy, and find that your glide is longer because of it. Repeat this exercise on flat water and on small swell energy to build up your understanding of how this works. The next step is to learn how to transition back to motor power. Have fun! --- ## It’s All in the Hips, Baby URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/hips-baby/ We call it the “hip slide”, but we’ve had people suggest “hip sway”, “foil hula” and other weird ideas. The point is that the hips control the efoil board in the pitch axis. HIPS BACKWARD TO GO UP When you are ready to get the efoil off the water and onto the foil, you only need to move your hips slightly backward to achieve a nose-up attitude. This will bring your board onto foil. But don’t stay in that position too long. HIPS FORWARD TO GO DOWN As soon as you feel the board come off the water, start to move your hips forward to change the board to a nose-down attitude. Again, it doesn’t take much movement of your hips to get the board to start coming down. WASH, RINSE, REPEAT Do this exercise at least 10-20 times to get the feel of the board under the control of your hips. We call this “touch-n-go”, just like the airplane takeoff and landing exercises. Soon you will have complete confidence in your pitch control of your efoil. Aloha. Have fun. --- ## Turning On Foil URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/turning-foil/ We consider turning on foil as an intermediate skill. The reason for this is because you must first master the two skills of roll control and pitch control before attempting to turn on foil. In our opinion, this is why so many foilers get hurt when they first try to “surf” the foil. Once you have complete confidence in your ability to control your roll and your pitch of the foil, then turning on foil becomes much easier. It is just a matter of starting the turn while you are on foil, and then maintaining pitch control so the board remains level. In most cases, you will unknowingly apply more pressure to the foot that you are turning towards. If you have a goofy stance (right foot forward), and you start a foil turn to the right, you will likely apply more pressure to your right foot. Since your right foot is forward, you will inadvertently change the pitch of your foil downward and find yourself back on the water. An easy exercise to help you foil turn better is a simple snake trail while on foil. This is just a series of small turns to the left, and then straight, and then right, and then straight. This creates a “snake trail” in the water without changing the direction of your path much. As you start this exercise, pay attention to how the board reacts to each turn. If your board is getting higher, it is because you are applying unnecessary pressure to your back foot. The opposite is true also. Simply be aware of your weight distribution and make slight corrections at each turn until you can maintain a confident foil height through each small turn. The next exercise helps you to hold a longer foil turn. Your new pattern will be a figure eight. Start with a large circle to one side, and as you complete the circle, level out, and change to the opposite side to create another large circle. Steadily trace your figure eight path while focusing on a level foil height. When you feel like you mastered the figure eight, tighten up your circles. You may begin to find new ways to turn the foil. It won’t be long before you really get the sense of how the board reacts to your movements. Carving the efoil is one of the best feelings on these machines. Have fun and share the stoke! Aloha --- ## Swell Following URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/swell-following/ There is a difference between swell following and wave riding on the efoil. Both are fun, and offer much more creativity than flat water riding. If you have the option to get into the open ocean on an efoil, find some rolling waves swells. The up, down, and side to side action of the swells provides a skatepark-like environment that brings out the most creative movements in your board. You will naturally follow the contour of each wave section, and gracefully move your hips and shoulders to match the flow of the ocean. I explain it like a dance between long-time friends. When the ocean stands up, so do you and your efoil. When the ocean shifts to the side, similarly, you and your efoil shift to stay in step. If you can hear music, you know you are in sync with the ocean. Swell following is easiest with your trigger partially pulled to provide sufficient speed to match the swell movement. By staying on a steady trigger, you will find the push and pull of the ocean as it adds energy beneath your foil. This can be intimidating at first, but your body will quickly adapt to the energy flow that affects your foil. Once you get proficient in swell following, you will be ready to start wave riding… without the use of the power from your efoil motor. Enjoy. --- ## Wave Riding URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/wave-riding/ There is a difference between swell following and wave riding on the efoil. Both are fun, and offer much more creativity than flat water riding. Wave riding uses the power of the wave rather than the power of the efoil motor. To ride the wave energy, you need to have the folding propellor from Lift Foils, or the true glide propellor from Fliteboard. It will take a bit of training to understand how to fully release the trigger without dropping the nose of your board, but once you figure it out, you will fall in love all over again with your efoil. The best part about wave riding with an efoil is the simplicity. No paddling; No pumping; No jet ski. You simply engage your motor to ride out to the waves, and release the trigger when you get aligned with the wave. Ride the wave until you run out of space, and then kick out and motor your efoil back to the next wave on the horizon. It is pure bliss. The trick is to learn how to shift your weight forward and backward when you engage and disengage the motor power. The thrust from thew propellor pushes the nose of the board up while the thrust of the wave doesn’t. To be clear, the release of the trigger is all at once, not little by little. Once you match the speed of the wave, you should release the trigger and shift your weight at the same time. Then let the wave guide you, and flow with the ocean energy. Aloha. --- ## Battery Management URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/battery-management/ The world is on a pathway to all electric power. As such, we have fallen in love with our battery-powered devices. We have cell phones, laptops, boosted boards, and drones. Electric  cars have become much more common in the past 5 years. One of the latest additions to the electric world is the surfboard… or more specifically, the electric foil board. I represent Lift Foils in Hawaii. As such, I have learned how to manage multiple efoils and their batteries on a daily basis. I am not an expert on Lithium Ion technology, but I am a practitioner that follows simple steps every time I use my efoils and their batteries. Here are my common steps to managing my batteries: 1. Charge batteries to full capacity the day before using them 2. Monitor the batteries when they are on the charger 3. Never leave the battery connected to the charger longer than necessary 4. Store batteries in a cool and dry location, away from your home if possible 5. Use a fireproof storage container if possible 6. Never drop the battery or expose it to impact 7. Never leave the battery in direct sunlight 8. Insert the battery into the efoil as the last step before entering the water 9. Remove the battery from the efoil as soon as possible 10. Keep the battery as dry as possible 11. Do not store the battery in a hot car 12. Monitor the LED indicators on the battery. Ask for help if different colors are shown. These are the steps that I take. If you are new to efoil boards, read the owner’s manual on batteries in its entirety. It is important. Stay safe, and have fun. --- ## Foil Tail Options URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/foil-tail-options/ First, let me say that there are unlimited options when it comes to tail or stabilizer options on your foil. Second, if you are new to foiling, start with the most stable foil set up which means: large area, long fuselage, low aspect tails. If you are an intermediate or advanced rider, you should definitely consider your tail options, and how it affects your ride in various conditions. On an efoil, most riders are staying on flat water because it is accessible and fun. Some fortunate efoil riders have access to great waves and they know how to ride them. When it comes to tail options, it can be very confusing. Hopefully the chart provided in this blog helps to simplify all of that. Knowing your tail options allows you to make the most of your efoil sessions on both flat water and on surf. With the efoil from Lift Foils, we have six tails to consider. As a beginner, you should start with one of the two tails in the Surf Series. That would be the 48 Surf V2, or the 38 Surf V2. The 48 will be more stable than the 38, while the 38 will provide more speed and agility. As an intermediate rider, you should consider the Glide Series. These tails have a higher aspect ratio which provides more speed and agility. The 25 Glide V2 is the smaller of the two options, which will make this tail the best to pump into the next section of surf. The final two tails in the Lift Foils line-up are the Carve Series tails. These tails have winglets or curved tips which allow for lots of grip in the turns. These tails are specifically designed with wave surfing in mind. They also have the shortest fuselage of all the Lift tails at just over 8 inches. This makes the Carve Series the best option for pumping. Whether you are riding equipment from Lift or another brand, we hope that you find the tails that are best for your riding conditions. Have fun out there. --- ## GoPro Control URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/gopro-control/ Everybody is capturing amazing videos of people living their best lives. GoPro has made it is very affordable to get an action camera that can make your best life look great on the small screen. When it comes to capturing images while riding the Lift Efoil, it can get a little tricky. First, there is the fact that you are on water. Water droplets on your lens will ruin most shots. The quick fix is to wipe or lick the screen before each shot. The better fix is to use a coating like RainX on the lens before you get into the water. Second, there is the reality of concentration. When riding an efoil, it takes a certain amount of concentration to maintain a level board, the correct speed,  and spatial awareness. If you add in start/stop recording, framing the subject, and considering light and audio, you can see how your concentration becomes heavily taxed. Our suggestion is to get incredibly proficient in riding your efoil first and foremost. The next step would be to start the recording on your GoPro, and just leave it on. You can always delete scenes in the editing step. Our final suggestion is to use a selfie stick that floats and is easy to carry. The GoPro Max is a good option, so you don’t have to worry about framing the shot, but the GoPro Hero10 is our favorite for its improved quality and incredible stabilization. Have fun on the water, but don’t let the camera ruin a good time. Memories are better experienced even if it is not shared on social media. Aloha. --- ## Riding a Foil Board Looks Like Fun, But... URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/riding-foil-board-looks-like-much-fun/ RIDING A FOIL BOARD LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH FUN, BUT… If you have seen anyone on a foil board (prone board, SUP board, wing board, kite board, etc.) then you know how exciting the ride looks to you. Then you have this big question in your head, “Can I learn to ride a foil too?” The basic answer is “Yes!”, but how hard is it? It is incredibly hard to learn to ride a foil board because of how sensitive it is, and due to the hydrodynamic nature of the foil. What I mean is that you can’t learn to fly without crashing a few times. The real question is how much time and determination do you have? If your answer is “a little time, and some determination”, then you still have a chance. Thanks to Nick and his team at Lift Foils, we now have the electric foil board, or efoil for short. This is a true game changer… FOR ANYONE who wants to learn to ride a foil. This is the only board that you can have a reasonable expectation of riding the foil, under control, within your first session. With every other foil board, it will take you many, many sessions to gain control and understanding of the foil. The big difference is the ability to control the speed of the board, to select ideal water conditions, and to repeat the learning process easily. With wind powered boards, you usually have choppy conditions, and the fluctuation in the wind changes the power and speed of your board. With prone and SUP boards, the speed is determined by the waves, and you burn a lot of time trying to catch the next wave. The efoil is different. You set a slow speed that allows you to find your balance, and then you increase the speed as you get comfortable, to the point where you can fly over water. When you fall (not if you fall), it is quick and simple to restart your ride. This gives you a high rate of repetition to learn from the previous mistake.  Within a single one-hour session, you can have the time of your life flying over water. So what are you waiting for? --- ## ACCELERATION: How to Make Your Efoil Faster and Easier URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/acceleration-make-efoil-faster-easier/ Do you want to go faster, but hesitate? Do you love speed, but don’t want to crash? This is a common sensation amongst all efoil riders. Learning how to efoil was your first step. Now you are improving your water skills. The requirement for mastery is repetition. In order to get better, you must make progress towards 10,000 reps. The good news is that you have the right tool; the Lift efoil. If you have a competing brand, don’t worry, your acceleration will only be slightly different. As you dare to ride your board faster, it is important that you correlate speed with lift: The faster you ride, the greater the lift This means that as you accelerate, your foil will generate more lift, thus pushing your board higher in the water column. TIP #1: To counteract this, you MUST APPLY MORE FRONT FOOT PRESSURE. Simply leaning forward will help to keep the nose from rising. As you accelerate more, you will need to adjust your stance further forward. With the Lift hand controller, you will be squeezing the trigger more and more. With all other hand controllers, you will be increasing your speed by pressing the “+” button or scrolling the throttle wheel. In addition to correlating speed with lift, you must also correlate wing area with lift: The larger the wing area, the greater the lift This means that as you increase the size of your foil, you increase the lift. TIP #2: Since you are accelerating to higher speeds, you should reduce the size of your foil. The smallest foil will handle high speeds much better, and you will also reduce the drag. BONUS TIPS: As you practice going faster and faster, be sure to stay to calm water conditions with very little current and water disturbance. Choose a medium sized foil at first, and then decrease the foil size. Use the fixed propellor so that you don’t accidentally fold the propellor as you slow down.  Add the wing fuselage extender or use the longest tail that you have to improve your pitch control. Start with straight lines. We wish you the best of luck in your quest for faster and faster runs on your efoil. Aloha. --- ## Stick the Landing URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/stick-landing/ DISMOUNTING YOUR BOARD I have to admit… I never teach this one thing, but it can be a make-or-break moment in front of family and friends. Everybody knows that if you stick the landing, you impress the judges. So why should it be any different when dismounting your efoil? In this post, I will offer a couple of ways to “turn pro” by sticking your dismount. It won’t take much practice, but if you do it well, you gain huge points with your fans, I mean family and friends. SLOW DOWN KNEEL DOWN The first dismount is a technique for everyone. It may seem obvious, but we get this question more than any other question from new students who absolutely fall in love with the efoil. The easiest way to dismount is to: 1. SLOW DOWN. Simply release the trigger slowly and allow your board to come back to the water and to slow down. 2. KNEEL DOWN. As your board slows, continue to release the trigger and kneel onto your board. 3. Fully release the trigger while you are on your knees. The board will come to a complete halt, and you can slide off your board and stick that landing. PUMP IT IN This second dismount is intended for the folding prop riders that like to add some flare to their dismount. It will take a little more trial and error, but not much. 1. GLIDE WITH MEDIUM SPEED. While on foil, release the trigger completely and start to glide. 2. PUMP IT. Use the glide to pump your foil to cover the distance you need. This shows some of your flare and skill. 3. TAIL SLIDE. To add more excitement, do a quick turn at the end, grab the far handle (away from the turn), and sit back on your tail to come to a quick stop. WALK IT OFF This final dismount requires timing and confidence. Again, it is not difficult, but it relies upon your level of confidence with your board. 1. GLIDE WITH MEDIUM SPEED. While on foil, release the trigger completely and start to glide. 2. When you want to stop, nose dive your board by moving your weight forward dramatically. 3. WALK THE PLANK. As you nose dive, step off the front of the board like you are walking the plank. If you time it well enough, your board will stop short of the beach while you walk right onto shore at waist high water. Obviously, there are numerous ways to dismount your efoil. These are just some of the fun ways that we dismount to have some fun with our students, family, and friends. As long as you are having fun, you are doing something right. Let us know your favorite dismount style. Without an instructor by your side, you’re left to figure out the nuances of efoiling on your own. Balancing on an efoil board and controlling its movements can be challenging, especially for beginners. Without proper guidance, you may struggle to find your balance, leading to frustration and potential accidents. The guidance of an experienced instructor is invaluable in helping you navigate the learning process smoothly. #### Potential Equipment Issues When renting an efoil, there’s always a risk of encountering equipment issues. You may find yourself dealing with technical difficulties or malfunctioning equipment, which can quickly ruin your efoiling experience. Without proper knowledge of the equipment, you may unintentionally mishandle it, leading to breakdowns or even accidents. In addition, you might be held financially responsible for any damage that occurs during the rental period. These factors can significantly impact your enjoyment and potentially lead to unnecessary expenses. #### Limited Learning Opportunities Renting an efoil typically provides limited time on the water. This restriction can hinder your learning process, as consistent practice and feedback are essential for improving your efoiling skills. Learning a new sport requires dedication, repetition, and a supportive learning environment. With efoil rentals, you miss out on the opportunity to receive continuous instruction, feedback, and correction. This may result in slower progress and a less fulfilling efoiling experience overall. ### Final Thoughts and Recommendations When it comes to efoil lessons versus efoil rentals, the choice is clear: efoil lessons are the way to go. They offer a multitude of advantages, including professional guidance, enhanced safety measures, and an optimized learning progression. With certified instructors by your side, you’ll receive personalized instruction, ensuring that you master efoiling techniques effectively and safely. While efoil rentals may seem tempting due to their convenience, they come with inherent risks and limitations. Lack of guidance, potential equipment issues, and limited learning opportunities make efoil rentals a subpar choice for beginners seeking to embark on an efoiling journey. Investing in  efoil lessons  is an investment in yourself. You’ll gain valuable skills, build a strong foundation, and have the confidence to explore the incredible world of efoiling. So, take the plunge, choose efoil lessons, and get ready to experience the exhilaration of gliding above the water’s surface like never before! --- ## Safety First – Fun Second – Foiling Follows URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/safety-first-fun-second-foiling-follows/ Safety First Fun Second Foiling Follows These are the three steps that we believe enables you to enjoy your efoil experience from your very first session through to the very last. This is a high speed, high thrill kind of activity, so it demands your attention. The first thing to pay attention to is your safety. It does not matter how much water experience or board experience you have. The efoil is a different piece of equipment that can humble you in the blink of an eye. So let’s be safe about it. We recommend the following steps and equipment for anyone who is exploring an efoil for the first time: • Take a lesson. it is well worth a couple hundred dollars to get professional guidance the first time you ride the efoil. Plus, it will save you hours of failed attempts to ride this board if you were to try it without a coach. • Wear a helmet. It is not a question of if, or when you fall, but how badly you fall. When you are standing on the efoil, you are not holding onto handle bars, or squeezing the seat. You are standing and trying to balance as the board flies above the water. You will fall, and you will want to try again. Wear a helmet. • Wear a life jacket. One, it is mandated by the US Coast Guard, and two it can save your life in the worst case scenario. The bonus is that it also provides a little bit of cushion for when you fall and end up landing your torso onto the rail of the board. • Bring a friend. Riding an efoil is super fun, so why not share the fun with a friend? Spend the time learning the efoil together. It helps to watch someone else ride the efoil by giving you ideas on how to improve your technique and approach. Plus you will have a safety person on the beach that can call for help if something bad happens. When you are riding your efoil proficiently, and start to ride waves or boat wakes, we suggest that you wear a leash. This will save you from a lot of swimming, and will keep your board from catching a wave without you into shore or worse, the reef. With safety measures in place, you can feel free to enjoy yourself, and remove the concern for falling out of your mind. After all, we already know you will fall. Now you know you won’t get hurt. And that is a load off your mind that is welcome. Aloha. --- ## Efoiling In Hawaii By The Rules URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/efoiling-hawaii-rules/ If you have an efoil, then you know how fun they are. But you should also know how dangerous they can be when not properly used. Today’s post is all about the rules and regulations that apply to efoils in Hawaii. We will highlight the regulations that apply to efoils within state waters surrounding the State of Hawaii. Private bodies of water may have different rules that are not covered here. Before we get started, you should first know that the Department of Boating and Ocean Resources, aka DOBOR, has followed the US Coast Guard’s guidance to treat efoils as vessels. As such, all rules and regulations that apply to vessels also apply to efoils with a few differences, which we will address at the end. Here is the quick list of what an efoil operator should do to follow these rules: You are required to register your efoil with DOBOR You are required to carry the following documents and safety equipment • Personal floatation device or PFD • A whistle • Proof of registration • Hull identification, specifically your HA number along the rails of your efoil Maintain a speed of slow-no-wake or 5 mph within 200 feet of any: • Shoreline • Float • Dock • Launching ramp • Congested beach • Swimmer • Diver’s flag • Anchored, moored, or drifting vessel With regard to marine life, maintain the following minimum distances: • 10 feet from turtles • 50 feet from monk seals • 150 feet from dolphin • 300 feet from humpback whales Comply with areas restrictions as shown on the DOBOR website These are the basics. You should become familiar with all of the rules, especially those that apply to water sites you visit the most. Now, there are a few exceptions that have been made for efoils. They include: • Efoils do not have to carry a fire extinguisher • Although an efoil does not create a wake, slow-no-wake speed does mean 5 mpH By following these established rules, you are helping to ensure a safe experience for all ocean visitors, both people and marine life. Also, you are showing that you respect the rules, the ocean, and this exciting sport of efoiling. Please leave any comments below or reach out to me at  hawaiiefoil@gmail.com . Aloha. --- ## Trigger Control URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/trigger-control/ Slow – Steady – Squeeze That is what I recall about trigger control with a 9mm in my hand during Marine Corps weapons training. The same thing applies to trigger control for the Lift efoil. Unlike the other brands of efoil boards, Lift has the unique hand controller that allows for a significant amount of speed control with the trigger alone. No buttons or gears to deal with. Squeeze the go faster. Release to go slower. In surf, and on smaller efoil models, trigger control is CRITICAL. It is also an obstacle to learning how to foil if you start with trigger control as your first skill. That is why we teach trigger control as the LAST skill to master after roll control, pitch control, and perfect alignment. The best way to master trigger control is to set your comfortable speed, get up onto your foil, and then adjust the trigger pressure to go a little slower, and then a little faster. You will naturally go higher and lower on the foil due to the speed variable within the lift equation. If you allow your body to shift forward and backward on the board as the situation dictates, you will find yourself maintaining a level board and an even height over the water. If you are able to do this, then you are halfway to full trigger control. The next step is to set your speed to be faster than you are used to. Now when you are transitioning to your feet, pull only as much speed as you think you need. As you stand up, maintain the same speed on a partial trigger pull. You may find that you are squeezing more trigger as you try to stand up. Try to separate your trigger finger pressure from your effort to stand. Once you can isolate your trigger finger pressure, then you will find it very easy to start and stop your efoil by using only as much speed as is necessary. This seems like a small issue, but it is critical to improve your overall enjoyment of this amazing water toy. As you venture into this exciting sport, mastering the fundamentals and honing your skills becomes essential for a rewarding experience. Whether you’re a seasoned water enthusiast or transitioning from another water sport, navigating the nuances of wing foiling can seem daunting at first. Fear not! In this guide, we’ll explore our top three invaluable tips tailored specifically for newcomers to the world of wing foiling. Let’s dive in and unlock the secrets to soaring gracefully across the water. Three Pro Tips Go Big! Bigger is better when you are starting to wing foil. Big board. Big foil. Big wing. The board is the most important choice to make. • Go with a 120 liter to 170 liter wing board. This will help you to learn faster because it is easier to balance on a big board. It is also harder to get up on foil with a big board, but you are not trying to get on foil yet. It is  impossible  to get on foil if you can’t balance on your board. • Go with a large mid-aspect foil. This should be a stable foil that allows for low take off speeds. • Select a larger wing that is suitable to your typical wind conditions. You want to have enough power to learn. A six meter wing is a good middle ground wing that is big enough to work in light wind conditions, and small enough to not be difficult to handle. Go with a partner that can tow you or drive you back upwind. You will end up way down wind. A partner on a boat or jet ski or with a truck on shore will be able to save you time and energy to restart in an upwind position. Land Practice. Learn to power up the wing on land. Practice every day if possible in light or medium winds. Ten to twenty minutes of land practice daily will save you hours in the water. Bonus! We have one bonus tip for you. Don’t quit. Especially early on, don’t quit. The struggle along the way makes the payoff worthwhile. If you remain diligent in your effort, your learning curve will be quick. You don’t want to miss out on achieving milestone after milestone. Stay the course and never quit. If you follow tip #2, quitting won’t be an option. Embrace The Suck As you set sail into the exhilarating realm of wing foiling, remember that every glide, every gust, and every fall is part of the thrilling learning process. By embracing “the suck” and these tips and continuously refining your skills, you’ll soon find yourself effortlessly riding the wind and waves with confidence and finesse. So, grab your wing and your foil, and let the adventure unfold. Here’s to countless hours of soaring, surfing, and celebrating the sheer joy of wing foiling. We hope to see you on the water! --- ## Choosing a Large Volume Board for Your First Wing Foiling Experience URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/choosing-large-volume-board-first-wing-foiling-experience/ Embarking on the journey of learning to wing foil is an exhilarating adventure filled with excitement and anticipation. In our previous article: “5 Essential Tips for Smooth Wing Foil Board Progression”, our first tip was to choose the right wing foil board. This is absolutely essential for all beginners. In this article, we’ll explore why choosing a large volume board is paramount for beginners and how it can enhance your wing foiling experience. Understanding the Importance of Board Volume: Board volume plays a significant role in wing foiling, especially for beginners. A board with higher volume provides increased stability, buoyancy, and forgiveness, making it easier for novice riders to balance, paddle, and progress their skills. When learning the fundamentals of wing foiling, having a stable platform to stand on can instill confidence and facilitate a smoother learning curve. Benefits of Choosing a Large Volume Board: 1. Enhanced Stability:  Large volume boards offer greater stability both when paddling and while standing on the board. This stability is invaluable for beginners as they learn to find their balance and build confidence on the water. If you can’t balance on the board, your ability to use the wing is drops to zero. 2. Improved Buoyancy:  A board with higher volume displaces more water, providing better buoyancy and preventing the board from sinking. This buoyancy makes it easier for beginners to paddle, get onto their knees and feet, and recover from falls without feeling overwhelmed. 3. Forgiving Performance:  Large volume boards are more forgiving of mistakes, allowing beginners to experiment and learn without fear of immediate consequences. Whether it’s wobbling during transition to your feet or losing balance while turning, a forgiving board can help beginners navigate through challenges more comfortably. 4. Versatility:  Large volume boards often have a wider range of use, allowing beginners to explore different conditions and progress their skills without outgrowing their equipment too quickly. From flatwater cruising to small choppy conditions, a large volume board can adapt to various environments as your skills develop. Choosing the Right Size: When selecting a large volume board for wing foiling, it’s essential to consider factors such as your weight, height, skill level, and local conditions. While larger boards generally offer more stability, you’ll want to find a size that strikes the right balance between stability and maneuverability for your specific needs. The general rule is to choose a board with 40 more liters than your weight in kilograms. So if you weigh 80 kilograms, choosing a board with 120 liters would be suitable. Choosing the Right Material: Wing foil boards come in many different shapes, sizes, and also varying materials. Although carbon fiber boards are the sexiest option, it is also the most expensive option, and completely unnecessary for a beginner. If you have a wide stand-up paddleboard, that could work very well for your first few sessions. If you can get an inflatable board, SUP or wing board, that would be our top recommendation. The inflatable nature makes the board much more forgiving when you fall down into the board. Conclusion: Choosing a large volume board for your first wing foiling experience is a decision that can significantly impact your learning journey. By prioritizing stability, buoyancy, and forgiveness, a large volume board provides beginners with the confidence and support they need to progress their skills and enjoy the thrill of wing foiling to the fullest. Whether you’re gliding across calm waters or catching your first waves, a large volume board is your ticket to an unforgettable wing foiling adventure. --- ## Mastering Wing Handling Techniques URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/mastering-wing-handling-techniques/ In our previous article: “ 5 Essential Tips for Smooth Wing Foil Board Progression ”, our second tip was to “Get Comfortable with Your Wing.” As you continue your journey into the exhilarating world of wing foiling, mastering wing handling will be essential for success on the water. In this second installment of our series, we’ll delve into the crucial skills of handling the wing on land and transferring those skills to the water. By mastering these fundamental techniques, you’ll build a solid foundation for your wing foiling journey and set yourself up for success on the water. 1. Handling the Wing on Land: Before taking to the water, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the wing and practice handling it on land. Start by laying the wing flat on the ground and familiarizing yourself with its components: leading edge, trailing edge, handles, and strut. Practice gripping the handles with both hands and experiment with different hand positions to find what feels most comfortable and stable for you. Use different stances such as from your knees, on your feet in your dominant stance, and also in a switch stance. Get familiar with how to power up the wing by pulling the wing towards your body with your back hand only, and how to release the power. Work on switching your hands amongst the handle options on your wing. The leading edge should have a handle to allow you to flag out the wing which releases all the power from the wing. Next, practice moving the wing through the air by walking along the beach. Maintain control and stability. Start with small movements, gradually increasing the range of motion as you gain confidence. Focus on keeping the wing stable and level, resisting the urge to overcorrect or jerk the wing abruptly. Remember to use your entire body, including your core and shoulders, to generate smooth and controlled movements. You will want to ensure that the lower tip of the wing doesn’t hit the ground. If it does, the correction is a simple punch with your back hand towards the wing. As you become more comfortable with basic wing handling on land, challenge yourself with different scenarios, such as changing wind directions or gusty conditions. By practicing in various conditions, you’ll develop the adaptability and resilience needed for success on the water. By moving your hands along the strut, you will become familiar with the location of each handle. 2. Handling the Wing on a Floating Board: Transitioning from land to water introduces a new set of challenges and considerations for handling the wing effectively. Begin by paddling out to deeper water on your foil board, ensuring the wing is fully inflated and ready for use. Position yourself on the board in a kneeling or standing position, holding the wing with both hands. Practice maintaining control of the wing while balancing on the board. Focus on keeping the wing stable and steady, using your body weight to counteract any shifts in wind or water conditions. Pay attention to your stance and posture, keeping your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent for stability. Your board should be level and your wing should be over your head. To start moving the board, lower your lead arm, but do not let the wing touch the water. As you gain confidence, experiment with moving the wing through the air while riding the board. Start with small adjustments, such as changing the angle of the wing or adjusting its position relative to your body. Practice coordinating your movements with the wind and waves, maintaining balance and control at all times. To steer the board, try “squeezing” your back foot towards your back hand. Don’t actually move your foot, but twist your hip and knee like you are squeezing the space between your foot and your hand. This will draw the tail of the board towards the wing, and shift the nose of the board slightly upwind. Your goal is to start riding forward at a 90-degree angle to the wind, or better. Conclusion Mastering the art of handling the wing on land before going to the water is a crucial step in your journey to becoming a proficient wing foiler. By honing these fundamental techniques, you’ll develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate the challenges of wing foiling with ease and grace. Stay tuned for the next installment of our series, where we’ll explore further skills and maneuvers to elevate your wing foiling experience to new heights. PRO TIP: Don’t plan on getting onto foil until you are able to consistently power up the wing, and steer the board 90-degrees to the wind. --- ## Mastering the Water Start Technique URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/mastering-water-start-technique/ Mastering the Water Start Technique in Wing Foiling In our previous article: “ 5 Essential Tips for Smooth Wing Foil Board Progression ”, our third tip was “Mastering the Water Start Technique”. This is essential for smoothly transitioning from paddling your board to riding via wind power. In this third installment of our series, we’ll dive into the intricacies of the water start, providing step-by-step guidance to help you master this fundamental skill. By honing your water start technique, you’ll unlock new possibilities for gliding across the water with grace and efficiency. 1. Positioning and Preparation Before attempting the water start, position yourself in the water with your foil board perpendicular to the wind direction. Ensure that the wing is fully inflated and positioned downwind and above you, ready for deployment. Find a comfortable depth where you can stand on the board while still having room to paddle and maneuver. 2. Initiating the Water Start To initiate the water start, take up an kneeling position and begin by holding onto the wing with both hands and positioning it above your head. Keeping your lead arm straight overhead, pull in with your rear hand slightly. As the wind catches the wing, use its power to generate some forward momentum. As you gain forward movement, get onto your feet, using the wing handles above you to steady yourself. Once you are standing, lower your lead arm slightly to gain more forward-directly power. It is important that you not let the wing tip touch the water. Remember to “punch-out” with your rear hand if your tip touches. 3. Balancing and Stabilizing As you taxi across the water, focus on maintaining balance and stability on the board. Until you gain confidence in this step, do not attempt to get onto the foil. Keep your weight centered over the board’s midpoint, with your feet positioned shoulder-width apart for optimal stability. Use small adjustments in your body position and wing handling to counteract any shifts in wind or water conditions. Your goal should be to maintain a level board, keep steady pressure from the wind in the wing, and steer your board 90-degrees or better across the wind. 4. Engaging the Foil Once you’ve achieved confidence and stability with the board on the water, it’s time to engage the foil and begin riding. You should expect to ride for several sessions on the water’s surface. You will know you are ready when you can easily capture the power of the wind, AND you can steer your board across or upwind slightly. To engage the foil, pull in your back hand to gain more speed, shift your weight slightly backward to initiate lift, and allow the foil to rise out of the water. You should expect the board to go slightly downwind as your foil engages. Once you are on foil, focus on leveling your board, and reducing your wing pressure. With the board off the water, you do not need the same amount of wind power to continue forward. Use gentle twisting pressure between your back foot and your back hand to control your direction of your board, using your eyes to direct yourself. Work towards maintaining a smooth and controlled level ride across the water. In your first several foiling attempts, be patient, and don’t fight the board or the foil. It is best to go with the flow of the board until you understand how to control it. Work on getting onto foil as well as returning to the surface. We call this up and down motion “touch ‘n go”. By spending time performing this maneuver, your learning curve will shrink, and your success rate will grow significantly. 5. Fine-Tuning and Refinement As you become more proficient in the water start technique, focus on fine-tuning your movements and refining each step in the process. Experiment with different hand positions and wing angles to optimize your efficiency and control. Practice initiating the water start from various positions and angles, building confidence and versatility in your skills. Conclusion Mastering the water start technique is a pivotal milestone in your wing foiling journey, opening the door to a world of exhilarating possibilities on the water. By following these steps and dedicating time to practice and refinement, you’ll develop the skills and confidence needed to execute smooth and seamless water starts in any conditions. Stay tuned for the next installment of our series, where we’ll explore further techniques and maneuvers to elevate your wing foiling experience to new heights. PRO TIP: Try to remain in calm water conditions during this process. It is difficult because you also need wind. Off-shore winds are more difficult because you can get blown out to sea, while on-shore winds tend to create very rough water. Jetty’s are helpful in side-shore conditions to allow the wind that we want, and the calmer waters that we want. Low winds offer a very difficult learning environment, while gusty and stormy conditions are the worse to learn. We find that 16-22 mph winds are good to learn in. --- ## Managing the Wing’s Power in Wing Foiling URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/managing-wings-power-wing-foiling/ Harnessing the Wind: Managing the Wing’s Power in Wing Foiling As you continue your journey into the exhilarating world of wing foiling, our fourth tip in a previous article: “ 5 Essential Tips for Smooth Wing Foil Board Progression ”, was managing the wing’s power. This is essential for achieving control and efficiency on the water. In this fourth installment of our series, we’ll explore techniques for harnessing the wind’s energy and optimizing your performance in wing foiling. By mastering the management of the wing’s power, you’ll unlock new levels of speed, agility, and maneuverability in your foiling adventures. 1. Understanding Wind Dynamics: Before diving into techniques for managing the wing’s power, it’s essential to understand the basic principles of wind dynamics. The wind’s force is influenced by factors such as wind speed, direction, and gustiness, as well as the size and shape of your wing. By developing a deeper understanding of these factors, you’ll be better equipped to anticipate and respond to changes in wind conditions while foiling. Some great resources for learning wind dynamics include: • American Sailing Association • PBS Learning Media 2. Adjusting Wing Angle and Position: One of the most effective ways to manage the wing’s power is by adjusting its angle and position relative to your body and the wind. In light wind conditions, angle the wing slightly higher to capture more airflow and generate additional upward lift. Conversely, in strong winds, angle the wing lower to reduce power and maintain control. Experiment with different hand positions and grip techniques to optimize your control over the wing. Keep your lead arm extended but relaxed, allowing for fluid movement and quick adjustments as needed. Use your lead arm to direct the wind power forward and/or upward. By maintaining a dynamic and responsive approach to wing handling, you’ll be able to adapt to changing wind conditions with ease. 3. Feathering the Wing: Feathering the wing involves momentarily depowering the wing by flattening its angle to the wind. This technique is particularly useful in strong gusts or turbulent conditions, allowing you to maintain control and stability while reducing the risk of being overpowered. Practice feathering the wing by gently releasing tension on the wing handles and allowing the wing to drift slightly downwind. As the gust subsides, regain tension on the handles and resume your desired course. By mastering the art of feathering, you’ll gain greater confidence and control in challenging wind conditions. 4. Sheet-In and Sheet-Out: Sheeting in and sheeting out refer to adjusting the tension on the wing’s leading edge by pulling in or letting out with the your rear hand on the rear wing handle. Sheet in to increase power and acceleration, providing additional lift and speed when needed. Conversely, sheet out to reduce power and decelerate, maintaining control and stability in strong winds or choppy conditions. Practice sheeting in and sheeting out while riding the foil board, focusing on smooth and gradual adjustments to avoid abrupt changes in speed or direction. By mastering this technique, you’ll gain greater precision and finesse in managing the wing’s power and optimizing your performance on the water. Conclusion Mastering the management of the wing’s power is a critical skill for achieving control, speed, and efficiency in wing foiling. By understanding wind dynamics, adjusting wing angle and position, feathering the wing, and sheeting in and sheeting out, you’ll be better equipped to navigate a wide range of wind conditions and elevate your foiling experience to new heights. Understanding Transitions: Transitions in wing foiling refer to the seamless maneuvers used to change direction or riding modes while maintaining momentum and control. Whether transitioning from a downwind run to upwind or executing a jibe to change direction, mastering transitions is essential for maintaining fluidity and efficiency in your foiling experience. 2. Executing Smooth Jibes: Jibing, also known as a downwind turn, involves smoothly changing direction by rotating the foil board while riding with the wind. To execute a jibe, begin by gaining speed to carry you through the turn. Then by shifting your weight slightly, initiate a gradual turn by applying pressure to the downwind edge of the board. As the board begins to carve, simultaneously lift the wing overhead, and release the rear handle to allow the wing to fly level and out of the way of your path. As you continue to turn the board around towards the opposite direction, switch your lead hand on the wing, rotate the wing to point in your new direction, and focus on balance and control throughout the maneuver. If you come off of foil, that is fine, but the goal is to remain on foil through the turn. Practice jibing in both directions, focusing on maintaining speed and fluidity throughout the turn. Pay attention to your body positioning, foot placement, and wing handling to optimize your technique and minimize drag. By mastering smooth jibes, you’ll be able to navigate downwind turns with confidence and precision. PRO TIP: You can gain many more reps if you practice your wing handling on the beach twenty or more times before you get into the water. By building up your muscle memory for handling your wing, you will increase your confidence on the water. 3. Perfecting Tacks: Tacking, or upwind turning, involves changing direction by sailing against the wind while maintaining forward momentum. To execute a tack, begin by sheeting in the wing to generate power and lift, allowing the foil to rise higher in the water. Simultaneously, shift your weight slightly forward and initiate a gradual turn by applying pressure to the upwind edge of the board. As the board begins to carve into the wind, raise the wing overhead and adjust the angle of the wing to maintain lift and forward momentum. It helps to push the leading edge towards the wind. Once the turn is complete, sheet out the wing to depower and stabilize, allowing you to regain control and continue riding in the new direction. It is highly recommended that you learn the jibe first, and then the tack. The tack is much more difficult to learn. 4. Practicing Transitions Between Riding Modes: As you become more proficient in executing individual transitions, practice combining them to seamlessly transition between different riding modes. Experiment with transitioning from riding with the wind to riding against the wind, as well as transitioning between riding on the foil and riding on the board’s surface. Focus on maintaining momentum and control throughout each transition, using smooth and fluid movements to minimize disruptions to your forward progress. Steady turns with a level foil is better than sharp turns or a foil with a high angle of attack. By practicing transitions between riding modes, you’ll develop greater versatility and adaptability in your foiling skills, allowing you to navigate a wide range of conditions with confidence and ease. Conclusion: Mastering transitions and turns is an essential aspect of advancing your skills in wing foiling, allowing you to navigate diverse conditions with grace and precision. Leveraging the foil drive, an innovative propulsion system, offers a strategic approach to kickstarting your wing foiling adventures. In this article, we’ll explore how the foil drive can serve as a valuable tool for aspiring wing foilers, guiding them through the initial stages of learning and paving the way for independent flight on the water. Step One: Utilize the Foil Drive to Traverse Upwind The first step in harnessing the foil drive for wing foiling begins with using it to traverse upwind after falling downwind in your attempts to wing foil. When starting out, it’s common for beginners to struggle with maintaining their desired direction and speed, often finding themselves drifting downwind unintentionally. In your first few wing foil sessions, you will drift downwind, leading to a long paddle or walk back upwind. This taxes your session, wasting energy and time. By using the foil drive, riders can confidently know that they have a simple way to traverse back upwind with the electric motor. Simply lie down or kneel on the board, hold the wing with one hand, and engage the foil drive with the remote in the other hand. In a few short minutes, you are back to your starting point, rested, and ready to try winging again. Step Two: Use the Foil Drive to Accelerate onto Foil Once you’ve mastered the art of traversing upwind without the foil drive, it’s time to leverage its power to accelerate the board onto foil. The foil drive’s propulsion system provides a boost of speed and lift, making it easier for riders to achieve the necessary velocity and momentum to transition onto foil. By harnessing this boost of power, transitioning from the water surface onto foil becomes easier, allowing riders to experience the sensation of flight with ease and precision. With some practice, riders will begin to understand what it takes to accelerate the wing board without the foil drive. Riders will also have the basic skills to make crucial adjustments when the foil fully engages and lifts them over the water. The goal is to not use the foil drive to accelerate. But having it allows for each session to be productive as you learn the many skills necessary to succeed in this sport. Step Three: Remove the Foil Drive and Ride the Wing Foil Without Assistance As you become more proficient and comfortable with wing foiling, the time will come to remove the training wheels and ride the wing foil without assistance. With the skills and confidence gained from leveraging the foil drive, riders are well-equipped to take flight independently, relying solely on the power of the wind and their own foiling abilities to navigate the water’s surface. Removing the foil drive marks a significant milestone in your wing foiling journey, signifying your readiness to embrace the freedom and exhilaration of unassisted flight on the water. The true benefit of using the foil drive to assist with learning to wing foil is the compression of time. Riders will spend less time paddling back upwind, less time transitioning onto foil, and less time getting frustrated with the learning process. You can’t skip any of the steps in learning to wing foil, but you can accelerate the process. Conclusion: Leveraging the foil drive serves as a valuable stepping stone for aspiring wing foilers, offering a strategic approach to mastering the art of foiling and paving the way for independent flight on the water. By utilizing the foil drive to traverse upwind, accelerate onto foil, and ultimately ride the wing foil without assistance, riders can progress through the initial stages of learning with confidence and ease. So why wait? Embrace the power of the foil drive and embark on an exhilarating journey into the world of wing foiling today! My name is Sarah, and I recently had the incredible opportunity to try efoiling for the first time with Hawaii Efoil Experience. As someone who loves trying new water sports but had never heard of an efoil until my trip to Hawaii, I was both excited and a little nervous. I want to share my experience with you, from the moment I arrived to that exhilarating first ride above the water. Discovering Efoiling It all started when I was planning my Hawaiian vacation. I stumbled upon Hawaii Efoil Experience while researching unique activities on the islands. The idea of gliding above the water on a board powered by an electric motor sounded like something out of a sci-fi movie. After watching a few mesmerizing  videos on YouTube , I was sold. I booked my lesson online, which was straightforward and user-friendly. Arrival and First Impressions On the day of my lesson, I arrived at the beach location where Hawaii Efoil Experience is based. They conduct their lessons in a lagoon between the airport and the harbor. At first sight, it seems removed from the normal tourist destinations. But once I was on the water, I completely understood why this was the ideal location to learn this super fun activity. The team greeted me with aloha, instantly making me feel at ease. My instructor, Donovan, introduced himself and gave me a brief overview of what to expect. He assured me that efoiling is suitable for all skill levels, including complete beginners like myself. Gear Up and Safety Briefing We started with a safety briefing and a rundown of the equipment.  The Lift efoil  looked sleek and futuristic, with a sturdy board and a hydrofoil wing underneath. Donovan provided a helmet, and a life jacket, ensuring I was comfortable and safe. He explained how the remote control works to adjust the speed and how to position my body for optimal balance. On-Land Training Before hitting the water, we practiced on land. Donovan showed me how to lie down on the board, gradually stand up, and maintain balance. This part was crucial as it helped me get a feel for the motions without the added challenge of water. His clear instructions and patience boosted my confidence. Taking to the Water Finally, it was time to get in the water. I started by lying on the board, holding the remote in one hand. As Donovan guided me, I slowly increased the throttle, feeling the gentle push of the motor. The sensation was smooth and surprisingly intuitive. Once I was comfortable, I attempted to kneel, and eventually, stand. The First Flight The moment I stood up and the board lifted above the water was unforgettable. I felt like I was flying! The hydrofoil glided effortlessly, reducing the drag and creating a surreal, almost silent ride. I could see the vibrant marine life beneath me and the stunning Hawaiian mountain range in the distance. It was a blend of tranquility and thrill that I had never experienced before. Overcoming Challenges There were a few wobbles and a couple of falls, but each time I got back up, Donovan was there with tips and encouragement. He emphasized that falling is part of the learning process and reassured me that everyone improves with practice. By the end of the session, I was able to ride steadily and even make gentle turns. Reflecting on the Experience Efoiling with Hawaii Efoil Experience was one of the highlights of my trip to Hawaii. It was not just about learning a new sport but also about connecting with the ocean in a unique way. The team’s expertise and friendly approach made the experience enjoyable and memorable. If you’re considering trying efoiling, I wholeheartedly recommend  Hawaii Efoil Experience.  Whether you’re an adventure enthusiast or just looking for a new way to enjoy the beautiful Hawaiian waters, this activity offers something truly special. Mahalo to Donovan and the team for an incredible introduction to efoiling—I can’t wait to come back and ride with them again! --- ## Efoils and Marine Life URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/efoils-marine-life/ Efoils and Marine Life: What You Might See While Riding with Hawaii Efoil Experience Aloha! One of the most enchanting aspects of efoiling in Hawaii is the opportunity to share the ocean with an incredible variety of marine life. At Hawaii Efoil Experience, we often find ourselves gliding alongside some of the most majestic creatures in the sea. Whether you’re a seasoned efoil rider or a first-timer, encountering these animals can be a highlight of your adventure. Here’s a glimpse of what you might see and important guidelines to follow to ensure a respectful and safe interaction with our ocean friends. Note: our lesson site usually encounters sea turtles only, with few exceptions Common Sightings: Turtles, Dolphins, and Sharks Sea Turtles (Honu): – These gentle giants are a frequent sight in Hawaiian waters. As you glide above the water on your efoil, you might spot a turtle leisurely swimming below or coming up for air. Watching these magnificient creatures move gracefully through the ocean is a truly serene experience. Please make sure to steer clear rather than approaching them. Spinner Dolphins: – Known for their acrobatic spins and playful nature, spinner dolphins often travel in pods. If you’re lucky, you might see a group of them leaping and spinning out of the water. Their exuberance and speed can make your efoil ride even more exhilarating. Reef Sharks: – While the idea of sharks might sound intimidating, the reef sharks you might encounter while efoiling are generally non-aggressive and pose no threat to humans. These sleek, beautiful creatures are an integral part of the marine ecosystem, and observing them from a distance can be a thrilling sight. Always remember to stay calm when you feel the excitement of a shark swimming nearby. Rare Sightings: Whales, Manta Rays, and Monk Seals Humpback Whales: – During the winter months, Hawaii becomes a hotspot for humpback whales migrating from Alaska. Seeing a humpback whale breach or hearing their songs underwater is a rare and awe-inspiring experience that you’ll cherish forever. Manta Rays: – These graceful rays are sometimes seen gliding through the water near the reef. Their broad, flat bodies and wing-like pectoral fins make them look like they are flying underwater. Manta rays are a spectacular sight, especially when they gather to feed on plankton. The manta, or hihimanu in Hawaiian, is the selected image for our company. Hawaiian Monk Seals: – The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered species and a rare sight. These seals can occasionally be seen resting on beaches or swimming near shore. Their presence is a special treat and a reminder of the importance of marine conservation. They can be aggressive, so please ride clear of these mammals for your own safety. Respectful Observation: Best Practices While encountering marine life can be one of the most magical parts of your efoiling experience, it’s crucial to respect their space and follow the guidelines to ensure their safety and yours. It is unlawful to approach any of these animals, and the best practices include: Slow to a Stop: – If you see any marine animals while efoiling, reduce your speed and come to a stop. This minimizes any potential disturbance to the animals and allows you to observe them calmly and safely. Choose a Direction Away: – Instead of heading towards the animals, steer your efoil in a direction away from them. This ensures that you are not encroaching on their space and helps maintain a safe distance. Observe from a Distance: – Use the opportunity to appreciate these creatures from afar. Your phone camera has zoom capabilities to allow you to capture images without getting too close physically. Conclusion Efoiling with Hawaii Efoil Experience offers not just the thrill of riding above the waves but also the chance to connect with the ocean’s rich biodiversity. From the common sightings of turtles, dolphins, and sharks to the rare glimpses of whales, manta rays, and monk seals, each encounter adds a unique element to your adventure. Remember, the key to a magical and respectful marine experience is to observe these magnificent creatures responsibly. By following the best practices and legal guidelines, we can ensure that these marine animals continue to thrive in their natural habitat, providing awe and inspiration for generations to come. Mahalo for joining us on this journey, and we look forward to sharing the waves and the wonders of the sea with you at Hawaii Efoil Experience! After a 20-minute break, she gathered her courage and decided to give it another try. With Alika’s patient guidance and the support of her family, the young girl stood up on the efoil. Fully Enclosed Propeller Design The Lift Jet Propeller features a fully enclosed design, eliminating the risk of accidental contact with the spinning blades. This is a significant improvement over traditional open propellers, providing a safe environment for both the rider and nearby swimmers. This feature is particularly reassuring for families and newcomers, ensuring that curious fingers and toes stay protected. 2. Reduced Risk of Injury The enclosed nature of the Lift Jet Propeller not only prevents direct contact but also minimizes the chances of debris or marine life causing damage or becoming entangled. This design significantly reduces the risk of injury, allowing riders to focus on enjoying their time on the water rather than worrying about potential hazards. 3. Smooth and Controlled Thrust With the Lift Jet Propeller, the propulsion system delivers smooth and controlled thrust, enhancing the rider’s ability to maintain balance and stability. This feature is particularly beneficial for beginners, who can concentrate on learning the nuances of hydrofoil boarding without sudden or unexpected bursts of speed that could lead to falls or accidents. The Lift Blowfish: Additional Layers of Safety 1. Inflatable Edge Protection The Lift Blowfish adds an inflatable edge around the board, providing an extra layer of cushioning. This feature is crucial for beginners who are more prone to falls and collisions. The soft, inflatable edge reduces the impact force, helping to prevent injuries during learning sessions. 2. Increased Buoyancy By incorporating the Lift Blowfish, the board gains 60% additional buoyancy, making it easier for riders to mount and balance on the efoil. This enhanced stability is especially helpful for novices, ensuring a more forgiving learning curve as they get accustomed to the dynamics of efoiling. 3. Additional Handles The Lift Blowfish includes additional handles to help riders to find a secure hand hold during their transitions from prone to standing. This increased security helps prevent loss of balance in various water conditions, enhancing overall safety on the water. However, my journey into this exhilarating world began with an unexpected catalyst: the efoil. Little did I know that this electric marvel would become the stepping stone that would not only introduce me to the thrill of hydrofoiling but also significantly shorten my learning curve. Discovering the Efoil It all started when I came across an efoil—a surfboard with an electric motor and a hydrofoil underneath that lifts you above the water as you gain speed. Intrigued by the concept, I decided to give it a try. The beauty of the efoil lies in its ability to provide a controlled environment for learning. With a handheld remote, I could adjust the speed and stability, allowing me to gradually get accustomed to the sensation of foiling without worrying about wind or waves. As I got comfortable with the efoil, I began to understand the dynamics of the hydrofoil—the lift created by the wings, the balance needed to stay upright, and the subtle shifts in weight required to steer. This phase was crucial because it laid the groundwork for my future endeavors on the water. The immediate feedback and consistency of the efoil were invaluable in building my confidence and muscle memory. Transitioning to Surfing Waves After mastering the basics, I wanted to take my efoil experience to the next level by incorporating a folding propeller. This addition allowed me to catch waves and surf them without the motor’s interference. The transition was surprisingly smooth, thanks to the solid foundation I had built with the efoil. Surfing waves with the efoil was a game-changer—it was like flying over the water, effortlessly gliding across the face of the waves with a sense of freedom I had never experienced before. Riding waves on the efoil honed my ability to read the water, adjust my stance, and make quick decisions. These skills were not only thrilling to acquire but also pivotal for my next challenge: wing foiling. The Challenge of Wing Foiling Wing foiling introduced a whole new set of variables, the most significant being the wind. Holding onto a handheld wing while balancing on a hydrofoil board was an entirely different ballgame. Initially, I struggled to harness the wind’s power effectively. Controlling the wing required a blend of finesse and strength, and coordinating this with the hydrofoil’s balance was daunting. However, the efoil had equipped me with a thorough understanding of hydrofoil dynamics. I knew how to handle the lift and navigate the board, which gave me an edge. The real challenge was mastering the wing. I spent hours practicing on land and in light winds, learning how to position the wing to generate the right amount of pull. Gradually, I started to find my rhythm. Once I got the hang of using the wing, combining it with the hydrofoil was pure magic. The feeling of harnessing the wind to propel myself across the water, lifting off the surface, and soaring above the waves was incomparable. The wing foil opened up a new dimension of riding, where I could dance with the elements in a harmonious blend of technology and nature. Reflecting on the Journey Looking back, I can’t overstate how beneficial the efoil was in my journey to mastering the wing foil. The controlled environment of the efoil allowed me to understand and practice the core principles of hydrofoiling without external factors like wind or waves complicating the process. This foundational knowledge made the transition to wing foiling much smoother, despite the added complexity of wind dynamics. Now, I cherish both forms of foiling. On windy days, I can’t wait to get out with my wing foil, enjoying the exhilaration of being lifted by the wind. In all other conditions, especially when the waves are calling, the efoil remains my trusty companion, offering a unique way to surf with ease and grace. At 50, discovering these sports has been a revitalizing adventure. The efoil and wing foil have not only kept me physically active but also provided a profound sense of accomplishment and joy. Each session on the water is a reminder that it’s never too late to learn something new and that the journey is as rewarding as the destination. --- ## Top Three Spots to Efoil on Oahu URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/top-three-spots-efoil-oahu/ Oahu is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, offering diverse and stunning locations for all water activities, including efoiling. Choosing the right efoil can make all the difference between a thrilling flight above the waves and a frustrating flop. With a market full of options, finding the perfect efoil might seem daunting. Fear not! We’ve distilled the essentials into the top five considerations to ensure your efoil purchase delivers unmatched performance, durability, and pure aquatic bliss. Whether you’re a speed enthusiast or a serene cruiser, these key factors will guide you to your ideal ride and keep you soaring with a smile. Here are the top five considerations to keep in mind when choosing an efoil to purchase: 1. Performance and Speed Different efoil models offer varying levels of performance and speed. Consider what kind of riding experience you want: are you looking for a leisurely cruise or high-speed thrills? Some efoils are designed for higher top speeds and more aggressive riding, while others prioritize stability and ease of use for beginners. Check the specifications for speed, battery life, and range to match your expectations. Consider how often you will be riding your efoil. It is broadly accepted that the efoil is easy and quick to learn. If you choose an efoil for beginners, and you ride daily, you may outgrow your purchase in a few short weeks. One way to avoid this mistake is to take several lessons with an instructor who can offer different efoils for you to test ride before making a purchase. 2. Battery Life and Range Battery life is a crucial factor as it determines how long you can ride before needing a recharge. Look for an efoil with a battery life that suits your typical session duration. Additionally, consider the range, which indicates how far you can travel on a single charge. Longer battery life and range are especially important if you plan to explore large areas or take extended rides. Many efoil brands offer a reduced and an extended battery size. You should consider both the ride duration you are looking for as well as the total weight of the board. The shorter the battery life, the lighter the battery. This can be a factor if you have a long walk from your vehicle to the water’s edge. 3. Build Quality and Durability Efoils can be a significant investment, so it’s essential to choose one built to last. Examine the materials used in the construction of the board and the foil. Carbon fiber and high-quality composites are preferred for their strength and lightweight properties. Ensure the efoil is designed to withstand the marine environment, with good resistance to saltwater corrosion and UV damage. 4. Ease of Use and Learning Curve If you are new to efoiling, look for a model that offers user-friendly features and a manageable learning curve. Some efoils come with adjustable power settings, which can be very helpful for beginners. Features like stability, ease of control, and intuitive remote controls can make a big difference in how quickly you can get comfortable and start enjoying your rides. Another option is to take a lesson from a professional who will help you to overcome obstacles along your personal learning curve. 5. Support and Warranty Given the technological nature of efoils, having good customer support and a comprehensive warranty is vital. Research the manufacturer’s reputation for customer service and after-sales support. A reliable warranty can provide peace of mind, covering potential defects and ensuring you have support if you encounter issues. Additionally, check if there are local service centers or easily accessible parts for maintenance and repairs. By considering these factors—performance, battery life, build quality, ease of use, and support—you can make a more informed decision and choose an efoil that best meets your needs and enhances your time on the water. At Hawaii Efoil Experience, we are reps for Lift Foils, a premier brand in the efoil world. Aloha. --- ## Efoil Made from Alternative Materials URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/efoil-made-from-alternative-materials/ The Case for EPP Foam and Inflatable Boards When it comes to efoiling, the type of board you choose can significantly impact your overall experience. While fiberglass and carbon fiber are the most popular choices for their durability and performance, there are compelling reasons to consider alternative materials like EPP foam and inflatable boards. Here are three main reasons why an EPP foam board or an inflatable board might be more desirable than traditional hard surface boards. 1. Enhanced Safety and Comfort One of the primary advantages of EPP foam and inflatable boards is their enhanced safety and comfort. These materials are much softer than fiberglass or carbon fiber, reducing the risk of injury during falls or collisions. For beginners or those who plan to share their efoil with friends and family, this added safety can be a significant benefit. – EPP Foam Boards: EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) foam is highly impact-resistant and can absorb shocks effectively. This makes it an excellent choice for novice riders who are still getting the hang of balancing and maneuvering the efoil. The softer surface is also more forgiving on the body, providing a more comfortable ride. – Inflatable Boards: Inflatable efoils offer similar safety benefits, with the added advantage of being less likely to cause injury in case of a fall. The air-filled construction provides a cushion-like effect, which can be particularly reassuring for new riders or those with children. 2. Portability and Convenience Another significant advantage of EPP foam and inflatable boards is their portability and convenience. Traditional fiberglass and carbon fiber boards can be bulky and heavy, making transportation and storage challenging. In contrast, alternative materials offer easier handling and flexibility. – Inflatable Boards: These boards can be deflated and packed into a compact size, making them easy to transport and store. Whether you’re traveling to a remote efoiling spot or simply need to save space in your garage, an inflatable board provides unparalleled convenience. – EPP Foam Boards: While not as compressible as inflatable boards, EPP foam boards are typically lighter than fiberglass or carbon fiber models. This makes them easier to carry to and from the water, particularly for solo riders or those with limited strength. 3. Cost-Effectiveness Efoiling can be an expensive hobby, and the cost of the board is a significant part of the investment. EPP foam and inflatable boards tend to be more affordable than their fiberglass and carbon fiber counterparts, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious riders. – EPP Foam Boards: The manufacturing process for EPP foam boards is generally less costly than for fiberglass or carbon fiber, resulting in lower retail prices. This makes EPP foam boards an excellent choice for beginners who want to try efoiling without breaking the bank. – Inflatable Boards: Similarly, inflatable boards often come at a lower price point due to their simpler construction and materials. For those new to efoiling or those looking for a secondary board for travel or family use, an inflatable option provides great value. Conclusion While fiberglass and carbon fiber boards offer excellent performance and durability, alternative materials like EPP foam and inflatable boards bring unique advantages that can enhance your efoiling experience. From increased safety and comfort to better portability and cost-effectiveness, these options cater to a variety of needs and preferences. If you’re considering diving into the world of efoiling or looking for a versatile and practical board, exploring these alternative materials might be the perfect choice for you. --- ## The Freedom to Enjoy Efoils URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/freedom-enjoy-efoils/ ### Celebrating Independence Day The Freedom to Enjoy Efoils As the sun rises on another glorious Independence Day, we find ourselves not just celebrating the birth of our nation, but also embracing the freedom that comes with it. Happy Independence Day! --- ## Efoil Rules, Regulations, and Etiquette: Navigating Shared Waters URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/efoil-rules-regulations-etiquette-navigating-shared-waters/ Efoiling is rapidly gaining popularity as a thrilling water sport. However, as more riders take to the water, it’s essential to respect local rules, understand regulations, and practice good etiquette to ensure safety and harmony among all water users. This is especially true in unique and bustling spots like Waikiki on the island of Oahu, where diverse groups—swimmers, surfers, boaters, and foilers—share the same waters. Here’s a guide to navigating the waters responsibly at a surf spot like Waikiki. This particular location has a boat channel, a surf spot at the end of the channel, and a mix of users. ### Know the Local Rules and Regulations 1. Understand the Designated Zones : In Waikiki, there are two main restrictions for efoils: (1) no efoils within 500 feet of the shoreline, and (2) slow-no-wake speed up to 1000 feet of the shoreline (see image). In our example location, there’s a boat channel extending from the shore to the open ocean. This channel is specifically designated for boat traffic and is also commonly used by swimmers, surfers, and paddlers. Riding an efoil in the boat channel is permitted but you should maintain a slow speed up to the wind sock that marks the channel, yielding to swimmers and other non-powered crafts. 2. Follow State Laws : Hawaii has specific regulations for powered watercraft, including efoils. These often include: • 3. Maintaining a safe distance from swimmers, surfers, and other watercraft. • 4. Operating at safe speeds near shorelines and other users in the water. • 5. Wearing appropriate safety gear, such as a leash and life jacket. 6. Check for Local Variances : Certain beaches or surf spots may have additional restrictions or guidelines. Before heading out, consult local signage or ask lifeguards for any specific rules applicable to efoils. ### Practice Good Etiquette 1. Avoid the User Conflict : Even though the boat channel is specifically set aside for boats, the boat channel is a shared space that requires vigilance. Stay in a prone position through the channel when others are also in the channel. 2. Stay Clear of Swimmers : Swimmers frequently use the boat channel in Waikiki for daily workouts as they swim into the open ocean. Keep a generous buffer zone to prevent accidents and give them peace of mind. 3. Respect the Surfer Lineup : Just outside this boat channel, you’ll find surfers riding waves. Avoid foiling through the lineup to prevent collisions and maintain goodwill among ocean users. Instead, use the open space next to the lineup that’s less crowded and more suited for foiling. 4. Yield to Non-Motorized Users : As a powered watercraft, an efoil has more maneuverability and speed than swimmers or surfers. Always give the right of way to non-motorized water users to minimize conflicts. 5. Communicate : Talk with the other water users. Let the surfer know that you will always yield to them. Comfort the swimmer by letting them know you see them, and will maintain a safe distance from them. Clear communication pays large dividends. ### Safety Tips for Efoil Riders 1. Protect Yourself : Wear a helmet and impact vest or life jacket to protect yourself against falls. 2. Maintain Awareness : Constantly scan your surroundings for swimmers, surfers, and others. Be ready to adjust your course to avoid unexpected obstacles. 3. Reduce Your Speed : High speeds are thrilling but should be reserved for areas with minimal traffic. In crowded zones, slow down to maintain control and reduce the risk of accidents. 4. Learn Self-Rescue Skills : If you fall or experience equipment failure, knowing how to safely retrieve and manage your efoil is critical. 5. Render Assistance : When you see another user in the water in distress, help them. We are all in the water for the same purpose, and we all want to make it home safely. ### Building Community on the Water One of the joys of efoiling is sharing the ocean with a diverse group of people. To foster a positive environment: • Communicate : A friendly wave or nod goes a long way in signaling your intentions and acknowledging others. • Educate : If you encounter new efoil riders, share your knowledge about local rules and etiquette. • Adapt : Each day on the water is different. Be flexible and ready to adjust your plans based on conditions and crowd levels. By following these rules, respecting others, and practicing good etiquette, efoil riders can help ensure that high traffic waterways, like Waikiki, remains a safe and enjoyable destination for all ocean enthusiasts. --- ## Efoil Battery Maintenance URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/efoil-battery-maintenance/ If you have made the investment into  purchasing  your efoil, you should also make the next investment…  maintenance! The most significant maintenance that you can perform on your efoil is battery maintenance. Your lithium battery is a major component of your efoil. This battery poses the greatest risk in my opinion. Lithium batteries have been known to ignite in a process known as thermal runaway. This battery also is very expensive to replace, so proper maintenance is critical to you and your investment. To ensure a long life for your efoil battery, follow these steps: BEFORE EVERY USE: • Charge battery to full capacity the day before using • Inspect battery for physical damage • Observe LED light indicators • Ensure data and power connection points are clear of debris INSTALLING INTO EFOIL: • Gently place the battery into the efoil as the last step before entering the water • Connect the power cable, the data cable, and then lock the battery into place • Never force any connection. If it is not easy, there is likely an obstruction or misalignment. • Observe the LED light indicators as you power up the efoil AFTER EVERY USE: • Gently disconnect the power cable, the data cable, and then unlock the battery • Observe the LED light indicators as you power down the efoil • Remove the battery from the efoil as soon as possible • Dry all water that may get on the battery • Apply ReelX on data and power connection points EXTENDED PERIODS BETWEEN USE: • Charge the battery to 50% • When battery charge depletes to 30%, charge it back to 50% • Store batteries in a cool (41 o F to 77 o F) and dry location, away from your home, if possible • Use a fireproof storage container such as a Zarges case, if possible • The battery will slowly lose charge over time in storage. If stored for several months, the battery can become over-discharged and lose the ability to be charged at all. To prevent this, plan to charge your battery to 50% every 2-3 months. ALWAYS: • Maintain battery charge at 30-50% when not in use • Monitor the batteries when they are on the charger • Store batteries in a cool and dry location, away from your home, if possible • Use a fireproof storage container, if possible • NEVER  leave the battery connected to the charger longer than necessary • NEVER  drop the battery or expose it to impact • NEVER  leave the battery in direct sunlight • NEVER  store the battery in a hot car • Keep the battery as dry as possible • Monitor the LED indicators on the battery. Ask for help if different colors are shown. • Have the most recent firmware installed NORMAL LED LIGHT INDICATORS: • Battery  not in use  will flash green lights every 5 seconds. There are 8 LED lights. Only lights proportional to the state of charge will flash (ie: 4 of 8 lights indicate ~50% charge) • Battery at  charging start-up  will go through a series of flashing lights. When charging starts, solid green lights will indicate the amount of charge in the battery, and the next LED light will flash green until that portion of the battery has been charged. • Battery fully charged will flash all green lights every 5 seconds. • Battery at  power on sequence  will go through a series of flashing lights. When power sequence is successful, four blue LED lights will be on steadily. • Battery at  power off sequence  will go through a series of flashing lights. When power sequence is successful, green LED lights will flash every 5 seconds to indicate state of charge. • Other colors may appear during any of the charging or the power sequences that indicate different status. If the end result is green lights or blue lights as stated above, the battery is operating normally. NOT NORMAL LED LIGHT INDICATORS: • If the battery shows flashing or steady lights that are  not  as stated above, contact  help@liftfoils.com  for help. • If the battery shows steady red lights, remove the battery from the board, from your vehicle, or your home. Store in a safe place and contact  help@liftfoils.com  for help. These are the steps that I take. If you are new to efoil boards, read the owner’s manual on batteries in its entirety. It is important! Stay safe, and have fun. --- ## Efoils: Blurring Boundaries in the Crossover Sports World URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/efoils-blurring-boundaries-crossover-sports-world/ Crossover sports bring together elements of two distinct activities, creating exciting new ways to experience and engage with the world. Efoiling, an innovative water sport combining the thrill of surfing with the technology of powered watercraft, exemplifies this concept. To better understand the unique challenges and opportunities of crossover sports, let’s examine their nature and consider the implications for safety and regulation, drawing lessons from similar activities like tow-in surfing. What Makes a Sport a Crossover? Crossover sports blend components from two or more disciplines, often requiring participants to develop hybrid skills. These sports not only create novel experiences but also challenge traditional approaches to safety, rules, and etiquette. For instance,  tow-in surfing  merges wave surfing with powered watercraft. Surfers use jet skis or boats to tow themselves onto waves that are too large or fast to catch through paddling alone. While the core activity remains surfing, the introduction of powered watercraft adds a boating element, necessitating adherence to both surfing and boating practices. ## Managing Safety in Crossover Sports The hybrid nature of crossover sports means that safety management must account for the characteristics of both contributing activities. Let’s explore how this works in the case of tow-in surfing. ### Boating Rules and Regulations : • Jet skis and boats used in tow-in surfing are governed by local waterway authorities. • Regulations typically cover: • • Licensing and operator training requirements • • Speed limits and no-wake zones • • Safety equipment mandates, such as life jackets and emergency signaling devices • • Navigation protocols to avoid conflicts with other water users ### Surfing Etiquette : Unlike boating, surfing is self-regulated through a cultural code of conduct known as  surf etiquette . These unwritten rules include: • Respecting wave priority–the surfer closest to the wave’s peak has the right of way • Avoiding dropping in on another surfer’s wave • Maintaining awareness of and respect for the lineup In tow-in surfing, participants must navigate the interplay between these informal guidelines and the formal boating regulations governing their powered equipment. ## Efoiling: A Modern Crossover Sport Efoiling, which involves riding an electric hydrofoil board, is another example of a crossover sport. It combines aspects of surfing–riding waves and gliding over water with the mechanical propulsion of powered watercraft. This duality creates unique challenges ### Boating Characteristics : • The motorized nature of efoils places them under the jurisdiction of boating regulations. • This means riders must: • • Adhere to speed limits and designated operational zones. • • Equip themselves with safety gear, such as whistles and life jackets. • • Operate responsibly to avoid endangering swimmers, surfers, or other boaters. ### Surfing Characteristics : When used in surf zones, efoils share the water with traditional surfers, requiring adherence to surf etiquette. Riders must: • Yield to surfers in the lineup. • Avoid interfering with waves claimed by others. • Maintain safe distances to prevent collisions or injuries. ## The Question of Regulation Efoiling’s dual identity as both a boating and surfing activity raises an important question: Should efoils be subject to boating rules, surfing etiquette, or both? Balancing these frameworks is crucial to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all water users. As the sport continues to grow, finding the right regulatory approach will require collaboration among local authorities, efoil manufacturers, and water sports communities. What do you think? Should efoiling prioritize adherence to formal boating regulations, traditional surf etiquette, or a hybrid approach? As always, surf and efoil with aloha, respect for others. --- ## Home URL: https://www.hawaiiefoilexperience.com/ # Fly Above the Water in Paradise Experience the thrill of eFoiling in Honolulu’s calm, scenic 45-acre lagoon just 10 miles from Waikiki. We have multiple sizes, so you will be covered. We also use communication devices so that we can provide you with clear instructions while we are on the water. Finally, we provide the efoil and all necessary equipment to ensure that you have a fun-filled experience. Not at all! Any type of boarding experience is helpful so that you have a good understanding of balancing on a moving board. This includes skateboards, snowboards, wake boards, and surfboards. Balance is a big part of riding any board, so even balance beam experience helps with efoiling.Athleticism is always a desirable trait to have when you are trying a new physical activity, but it certainly is not a deal breaker. First of all, standing up is not a requirement for foiling. Some of our students prefer the stability of kneeling and start to foil from their knees instead of from their feet. As long as you have a comfortable sense of balance, and you can perform a one-legged squat, you should be able to stand up on our efoil boards. If a one-legged squat is difficult, or your balance is a bit shaky, then we would recommend that you stay in the prone or the kneeling position for your lesson.Absolutely! You will want to watch yourself when you get home. Your family and friends will want to know why you are so excited about this efoiling thing. We will ask our instructors to film you with your camera so that you can focus on learning how to efoil. As long as you have a standard GoPro mount to slip onto our floating handles, you are encouraged to bring your GoPro camera. We recommend children under 16 to NOT participate in efoiling. Children 16 and older are definitely safe to ride an efoil. Although we brag a bit about how fast we can go on an efoil (30 mph), the reality is that only the pros operate this equipment at that top speed. During your first lesson, we stay below 10 mph. Additionally, the throttle is in your hand, so only you can determine your speed. If you're interested in an exception for a child under 16, feel free to reach out—some experienced or confident younger riders may be eligible with prior approval.Swimming proficiency is what we require. You will need to demonstrate to your instructor that you are able to swim with a life vest and helmet on while holding your hand controller. Everyone falls off of the efoil on their first try. Being able to swim back to your efoil board is a common activity for any efoil lesson. Speed is not required, and grace is optional. Style points still count. Our lessons are mostly conducted in paths that are parallel to the shoreline. The area that we use typically is 200 – 300 feet offshore so that we are not interfering with near shore activities. People on the beach will be able to see you, but they won’t see the color of your eyes.Yes. We are licensed, insured, and authorized to do what we do. We have been granted permission to conduct our lessons in the locations posted on our site. We are also insured as any reputable business would be in order to protect our assets, our operations, and our customers. Finally, we are authorized by Lift Foils to conduct efoil lessons and to sell Lift Foils equipment. If you are going to participate in an activity that involves specialized equipment in the ocean, you should know that your guide is conducting business correctly and following all rules and regulations. If they are cutting corners with rules and regulations, what other short cuts are they taking that could impact your experience? We are an authorized representative of Lift Foils, the inventor of the original efoil. We can address all of your questions about Lift, and some of your questions about other manufacturers. We have all of the efoil board sizes and all of their front wing sizes from Lift that you can try so that you can compare the differences. We operate under Lift’s “fly before you buy” program so that you know what you are getting before you make your investment. Additionally, we will provide you with a discount code that will reduce your purchase price of a Lift efoil. It depends. If you have taken a lesson with us, it is possible. We need to ensure that you know how to operate and to care for the efoil boards. These efoil boards are not common (yet), and there are many hazards that you could run into in the water and on land. Come talk to us one-on-one to determine how it could be possible for you to rent a board. The base rate is $289 per lesson which provides you with a 90-minute lesson. At least 60 of those minutes will be spent on the water. We also offer discounts for kama’aina, U.S. military and veteran families at 10% off. Contact us for a discount code. The folding prop is the most impressive innovation from Lift Foils. Essentially, it allows the eFoil to ride like a surf foil… by the power of the wave. You can see a video by the designer here. Hawaii Efoil Experience does have folding props, but they are reserved for use by experienced efoilers. We can show you the folding prop and discuss the benefits of them, but before you can use it, you will have to demonstrate to us that you know what you are doing before trying to take this into surf.Ages 16+ are welcome without hesitation. Ages 15 and under need to be very confident in the open ocean. Call us 808-466-8788. Weights up to 300lbs are welcome.First of all, we will be spending most of the lesson in the water, so a swim suit is the obvious answer. What may not be obvious is that you will be transitioning between three positions: prone – kneeling – standing. Our deck pads on our boards are very good for foot grips, which also means they can wear on your knees. It would be a good idea to protect your knees with either longer swim pants, or neoprene sleeves to avoid unnecessary rubs or skin abrasions. For women, we definitely recommend more than a bikini bottom. Ideally, wearing aerobic pants or paddling pants would be helpful. A shirt is also a good idea to keep the sun off your arms and back, but not necessary.93% of our students are able to foil comfortably on the eFoil during their first lesson. It is easier than learning how to surf, and way more exhilarating. The other 7% had a personal obstacle that was not overcome within the first lesson. We have the safest efoils on the market. The propellors are fully shrouded for your safety. We also have stabilizing solutions to improve your balance. We provide you with helmets and life jackets as well as a personal instructor at your side to keep you as safe as possible. If you are using Google Maps to find us, type in “ Marine Education Training Center ” to get the best directions to a building nearby our primary lesson site.
